Frequently Asked Questions

How much emphasis is placed on GRE scores?
Although the GRE is important, the scores are only one component out of many pieces of information that we review. There is no absolute minimum score required. Of all the parts of the application, the Statement of Purpose is the single most important indicator considered by the Admissions Committee.

Can I do a program in Literature and Religion with the ILA?
No. Although Literature and Religion was formerly an important field within the Institute, we no longer have faculty active who work in that area. You may want to consider Emory's Graduate Division of Religion as an alternative.

What if I can't decide which area (Culture, History, and Theory or American Studies) my proposed program fits into. Will this hurt my chances of admission?
Absolutely not. The flexibility of our program allows students to work in both areas simultaneously.

Do you accept students into the program without an advanced degree (Masters)?
Yes. However, we look for students with a level of intellectual maturity that usually comes either with an advanced degree or a significant period of work/living experience. Our typical entering classes include only one or two persons who come directly from an undergraduate experience.

How do I apply for a Woodruff, Emory Graduate Diversity or an Arts and Sciences Fellowship?
All applications received on or before the Jan. 3 deadline are automatically reviewed and, if eligible, considered for nomination to the Graduate School.

Is it possible to have the GRE scores waived if I have an MA degree?
Technically, you have the right to petition for a waiver from the ILA Admissions Committee. In past years, this committee has not approved any such requests.

If my GRE scores are more than 5 years old, do I need to retake the exam?
Yes. The GRE must have been taken within the last 5 years in order to be used in admission decisions.

How do I arrange to interview with faculty of the ILA?
We only formally interview the finalists for admission. However, you are always welcome to visit the campus and stop by our departmental office. If you are interested in communicating with one of our faculty, please visit our faculty/staff listing for email addresses and office phone numbers.

If accepted, I am interested in beginning my studies at Emory in the spring. Is this possible?
No. The ILA only admits students to begin degree programs in the fall semester.

Can I do part-time study?
No. The program is designed for full-time graduate study only.

When will I know if I have been accepted into the program?
Offers are extended to applicants in March and early April.

What area will my actual Doctorate degree reflect?
Your diploma will read simply "Ph.D.". It is your responsibility to explain to interested persons the particular content of your program.
